Amps without an FX-Loop

Most modern amps have an fx-loop. But some (vintage) amps don’t. The KHE can’t add or create a post-amp fx-loop for amps without one. Only amps with a real fx-loop can fully utilize the KHE fx-loop switching feature. Alternatively, it’s possible to route the KHE input section differently for amps without an fx-loop:

  • Connect the KHE AMP IN jack to the related KHE FX-SEND jack by a instrument patch cable.

  • Connect the KHE FX-Return jack to the related Amp Guitar Input by an instrument cable.

When routed like this, it functions as a Pre-Loop: Pedals in the master-fx-loop will be routed in front of the amp, rather than in the (non-existing) fx-loop. The fx-loop can be turned on or off (true-bypass) using the frontpanel FX switch or by MIDI.

While this type of Pre-Loop is not the same as a real fx-loop, it can be a useful way to use the the effect pedals with such amps. Use shielded instrument cables for all connections. It is possible to have some amps connected with the standard fx-loop wiring and others with this type of pre-loop wiring on the same switcher.

Word of Caution:

Make sure to get the wiring right. If connected wrong, the KHE's input muting may be defeated, which could damage the switcher. Double-check the wiring and ensure that the plugs are fully inserted. Only use quality cables without right-angle plugs (risk of ground shortcut). Always make sure to have both input cables connected as shown in the diagram, so the AMP-IN jack can fully mute the actual amp guitar input. If, for example, the short patch cable is missing, the amp input would see an open input with no muting, which could damage the switcher. Do not connect any pedals directly to the inputs of the amps. Make sure not to mix up the KHE channel number between the amp input switching section and the fx-loop switching section (Amp 1 = FX S/R 1). Only connect it exactly as shown in this diagram and use it at your own risk.

Alternative

Use an active attenuator with built-in fx-loop, such as the Boss Waza TAE or the Fryette Power Station.
